Capacity

How many rooms can one multi-split outdoor unit serve?

Domestic multi-split outdoor units typically connect two, three, four or five indoor units. The outdoor unit is sized for the combined load of all rooms, taking into account that they rarely all need full output at the same time.

Each indoor unit has its own remote or app control, so the main bedroom can sit at 20°C overnight while the home office is switched off — and you only pay for the rooms you use.

  • 2 to 5 rooms per outdoor unit
  • Individual temperature in each room
  • One condenser outside
  • Cooling and heating

Mix and match

Mixing indoor unit styles on one system

Most manufacturers let you combine different indoor unit types on the same outdoor unit, so each room gets the style that suits it.

Planning

Planning a multi-split installation

Finding the right spot for the outdoor unit

Because every room connects back to it, the condenser’s position decides how long the pipe runs are. A central, accessible position — often a side or rear wall — keeps runs short and efficient.

Routing pipework to each room

Pipes can run externally in trunking, through lofts and ceiling voids, or inside walls during a renovation. We plan routes room by room so the result is neat inside and out.

Thinking ahead

Planning a loft conversion or extension? We can size the outdoor unit with spare capacity and fit capped pipework, so adding a room later is straightforward.

Multi-split FAQs

Multi-split questions answered

Can different rooms be on heating and cooling at the same time?

On standard domestic multi-splits, no — all indoor units run in the same mode, though each sets its own temperature. Larger commercial heat-recovery systems can heat and cool simultaneously.

Is a multi-split suitable for a flat or terrace?

Often it’s the best option, because space for outdoor units is limited. One condenser on a balcony, flat roof or rear wall can serve the whole home, subject to freeholder or planning consent.

How long does a multi-split installation take?

Two or three rooms usually take one to two days, depending on pipe routes and access.
